The answer is two fold:
the registry is essentially a database of all of your Windows settings that describes where things are installed, how they are configured, what they do etc. One of the quickest ways to kill a working system is to accidentally do something incorrect to the registry.
- If you don't know what regedit is or does and you want to potentially make your system inoperable, use regedit.
- If you do know what regedit is and does, it allows the changing of settings that have no interface, removal of programs, changing of system behaviors and much more.
