Is Kendal A Prosperous Town?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Kendal's economy has grown up around the wool trade which began in the 13th century.  During this time, there were many mills located on the River Kent.

In the 19th century, it became a centre for the manufacturer of snuff and shoes with K Shoes being a major employer until the closure of its factory in 2003.

These days, there are still several light industries located in the town, but tourism is the major employer.

Kendal Mint Cake is probably the most famous item to come out Kendal these days.  The factory that makes it is still situated in the town and they can make it by the ton every day.  Its popularity along with the tourists will ensure that the local economy stays in good shape.
