Confucius:
Confucius, a Chinese philosopher (4th Century BC) taught that the state should be run as a large family, as this would be the best for the people. Just as a father is loved and obeyed by his family, so should the ruler be a father figure for the people, to be loved and obeyed.
Plato:Plato (c429-347 BC) was a Greek philosopher, who also set up a college called the Academy, which lasted for 800 years. In his famous book, The Republic, he said that education for both boys and girls was the secret to development: the most intelligent ones would run the country. One of Plato's famous students was Aristotle who was later the tutor of Alexander the Great. Aristotle set up the Lyceum in Athens.
Socrates:Socrates (469—399 BC) was another Greek philosopher who became very famous for his unusual way of expressing his ideology. He questioned people, compelling them to think about life, value, rights and responsibility. His support of the rights of the common man made him very popular with the youth, but this alarmed the rules of Athens: they forced him to drink hemlock – a poisonous brew, which led to his death. Socrates chose death instead of denying the truth: we can say that he was a hero of his time. Socrates' most famous pupil was Plato.
