New England is not only a picturesque corner of the great American continent but also home to many rare species of plants. The flora and fauna of New England is influenced by its unique geography and landscape conditions. It has a jagged shoreline, extensive rolling hills and mountains. The climate however in New England is highly unpredictable with both hot humid conditions as well as long cold winters.

The kind of plants to plant in New England therefore greatly depends upon which part of New England you stay in and the respective soil and climate it has. The small whorled pogonia or the Isotria medeoloides grows well in the acidic soils of New Hampshire and Maine. Other plants that are reputed to flourish in New England include the (oysterleaf) (Mertensia maritime), the Plymouth gentian (Sabatia kennedyana), the goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis), the Lapland diapensia (Diapensia lapponica), the male fern and the northern gama-grass.
