Is Giant Hogweed Native To The British Isles?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Giant hogweed is not a native to the British Isle but is an invasive terrestrial plant that has invaded the British Isle throughout, especially the river banks. The scientific name for hogweed is Heracleum. The Heracleum genus belongs to the Apiaceae family.

This plant has the potential of causing rashes on affected people. The hogweed tends to become a pest within gardens due to its invasive and tenacious nature. Due to this very nature now the British Isle seems invaded by this genus. This plant exudes a liquid which sensitizes the skin to the ultraviolet light due to which a person who has come in contact with this liquid may suffer from burns and rashes. The seeds of this plant remain even though the parent plant may have been removed, making it almost impossible to get rid of.
