What Is Edwinstowe Named After?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The name Edwinstowe means 'Edwin's resting place' and it gets its name as the body of King (and Saint) Edwin of Northumbria was kept hidden in the church after his death probably in the year 633. It was in the Battle of Hatfield Chase, which took place near Doncaster, that he was killed.

The village of Edwinstowe is in the middle of Sherwood Forest, which is in north Nottinghamshire, England. There are references to Edwinstowe even in the Domesday Book. Local folklore has it that Robin Hood was married to Maid Marion his sweetheart in St Marys Church.

The Thoresby Colliery is the main source of employment in Edwinstowe. Since the fall of the coal industry in Britain, however, tourism is a growing industry here. It has a key influence on the local economy owing to the universal popularity of the legend of Robin Hood as well as the alleged site of Robin Hood's base at the Major Oak. The village even has a Sherwood Forest Fun Park.
