What Is The Energy-generating Potential Of Domestic Wind Energy?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Assuming, that domestic wind energy means something like a small wind turbine, with blades 2 or 3 metres in total diameter, mounted in the roof or wall of a domestic residence.  The best case scenario is that a wind turbine could generate 1 kWh/day for most households, about 20% of the total usage.

There are approximately 24.5 million households in the UK.  This is separate from institutions like care-homes and prisons.
Not all residences are suitable to have a wind turbine on top. Some homes have the wrong sort of walls or roof (especially thatched), or are too sheltered from air currents.  Many people live in flats or maisonettes (about 33% of the population as a whole).

Assuming that all detched homes and half of terraced/semi houses had a wind turbine on them, that would be 10.7 million homes, generating up to 500 MWh  of electricity annually (about the third of the capacity of one coal-fired power station).
