Which Three Countries Play In The Tri-Nations Rugby Tournament?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The Tri-Nations annual rugby tournament, first played in 1996, is a competition between the Australian 'Wallabies' Rugby team, the South African 'Springboks' and New Zealands 'All Blacks'.  New Zealand and Australia have been competing against one another since 1903.  Although South Africa toured both nations, due to apartheid, it never before took part in any formal competitions.  The first Tri-Nations tournament, played in 1996, was won by the dominant 'All Blacks'.  In the ten years since the tournament was first played all three countries have had their turn at winning the cup.  The Tri-Nations competition begins in July and ends in September.  This three month long competition is played, in part, in each of the three competing countires over the course of the three months.  The 2006 event opened in New Zealand before moving on to Australia and, then, finishing in South Africa.  Both the 'Springboks' and the 'Wallabies' have won the cup on two occassions, whereas the stronger New Zealand team, the 'All Blacks', have now won the cup seven times.
