An itch mite is quite rare and it is one of the only mites which can actually live within the skin. Most mites live on the skin and feed off it, but they do not usually burrow into the skin. So, the fact that itch mites live in the skin itself, makes it hard to spot them and realise that there is a problem. There are different types of itch mites and each live on a different type of animal. Some like to live on dogs, some on birds and others on humans.
When living on humans the itch mite does tend to cause scabies. However, they are only usually present in overly crowded areas. Jails and homeless shelters are likely to be infected unless kept exceptionally clean. The only way to really get rid of the problem is to remove the mites and in order to do that you have to find the burrow where the mites went in. That is usually between the knuckles or on the elbow. After locating the burrow you then have to open it up and find the mite at the end of it. Remove the mite with a needle and it is only then that treatment can really start.
