How Was Life During World War Two For Women?

Answer Question

2 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

Most women were left at home to raise their families alone whilst their man was fighting in the war.  Food was strictly rationed as were clothes and families were given coupons which had to be handed over when they bought anything.  There were few items in the shops.  They had to learn to cook with basics, mend clothes.  They were recyclers!  Clothes got passed from one family member to another until they were used for rags.  Sheets when worn were cut in half and the two good outside ends joined together.  If they were not good enough to make a new sheet then they were turned into pillow cases.

The women if they did not have a very young family had to work in factories and on the land.  Flower gardens became vegetable patches.

I don't know for a fact how their life was, but i can guess from the information in textbooks and television shows that it was very difficult for them because their husbands had to go to war and they were not sure if they would get to see the husband ever again. So in a way it was depressing for them because they struggled at home not knowing what could be happening to their spouses.
