The recent findings of the National Nutrition Survey reflected alarmingly contradictory results, elucidating that about 54.4 percent of women in Pakistan have awareness and recognition of the merits of using iodized salts and the importance of iodine in their physical growth and development. On the contrary, despite of this increased percentage of awareness, the practical facet of the situation was still loomed over by a tenebrous shadow, reflecting only a meagre 17 percent of households in Pakistan who are actually engaged in utilizing the benefits of iodine.
The reason attributed to this lack of utilization despite of the awareness and knowledge is the higher price of the salt as compared to the price of the ordinary and unbranded salt reported by about 35 percent of the households. Another 17 percent of households present the reason of unavailability of iodized salt as the main one in their failure of utilizing the benefits of iodine. A misconception that exists between an additional 13 percent about iodine is its contraceptive tendency, which encumbers them to use it.
