British sitcom The Vicar of Dibley was written by Richard Curtis and Paul Mayhew-Archer. It was written especially for Dawn French who starred in the title role.
The series was set after the real life change that saw women able to be ordaned for the first time. It was set in the village of Dibley which got its own female vicar and it follows in a comedic way, how the villagers react to the change.
Series one which started in November 1994 contained 6 episodes, there were two specials in 1996 and another series of 4 episodes that started with a Christmas special in 1997.
There was a Comic Relief special in 1999 that also starred Johnny Depp and Sarah Ferguson, and a 4 part series 3 shown in the Christmas holiday period of 1999.
2 Christmas specials were shown at Christmas 2004 to celebrate 10 years of the show.
In 2006, Dawn French said that there were more Christmas specials in preparation and these two shows likely to be shown over Christmas 2006 will be the last apart from one final Comic Relief sketch for March 2007.
If you include those final two Christmas specials, that makes 20 episodes plus 2 Comic Relief specials.
