OSPF or the Open Shortest Path First is an interior routing protocol. As we all know that area is the collection of networks, hosts and the routers all contained within an autonomous system. An autonomous can be divided into various areas. All networks inside an area must be connected properly. Router inside an area flood area with the routing information. At the border on an area, the special routers called the area border routers summarize all information about the area and send it to the other areas. Among the areas inside an autonomous system is a very special area called the back bone; all  areas inside an autonomous system should be connected to the back bone. So it is clear that back bone server as a primary area.

While the other areas serve as secondary areas. The routers inside the backbone are termed as backbone routers. This backbone router can also be an area border router. If in some problematic situation, the connectivity between the backbone and an area is broken, the virtual link between the routers must be created by an administrator to allow the continuity of functions of the backbone as the primary area. Each area will always be having and area identification.
