The activity of smoking involves inhaling a cigar or cigarette into the lungs, and exhaling the smoke produced by the cigarette (also referred to as fags, tabs and smokes).

Cigarettes contain a highly addictive stimulant drug called Nicotine, which makes the smoker feel relaxed and briefly "high". Nicotine is a legal drug in the UK and US which is why cigarette production and sales continue. It is worth mentioning that Nicotine is not physically addictive (like Heroin) but can force the smoker to feel mentally dependant on the soothing high of taking a drag from the cigarette.

The effects from smoking are proven to be extremely detrimental to health. Smoking causes breathing difficulties - such as bronchitis and emphysema, which can lead to further complications. The effects of smoking develop over a long period of time and can lead to lung cancer, heart disease and even death.

Smoking ruins health by destroying healthy tissue and depositing tar in the lungs which affects the normal healthy functioning of our human breathing parts. Smoking ruins both the inside and outside of the body. Smokers often have a pale, greying complexion which is caused by the lack of oxygen being supplied to the surface of the epidermis. This is caused by the intake of nicotine into the bloodstream which inhibits its ability to carry oxygen. Smoking causes premature ageing by damaging cells, leading to wrinkling and sagging of the skin from loss of elasticity. Fingers are often stained by the continued use of the cigarette and the smoker will often carry the unpleasant odour of stale cigarette smoke.

If you smoke and are thinking about giving up, don't delay. Smoking can take years off your life, make you very unwell and more prone to illness and inhibit your ability to be strong and fit. Quitting fags is really difficult, but it is mainly down to willpower. You need to try different methods of quitting such as nicotine patches, chewing gum and maybe even acupuncture. Hypnotherapy and shock tactics are also effective methods to attempt if all else fails for you.
