Who Was Oswald Mosley?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Oswald Mosley was a charismatic British politician who reached the pinnacle of his fame in the 1930s. He began as a member of the Conservative party before leaving it for the Liberal party, leaving that in turn for the Labour party, then finally quitting that too and establishing a new political party of his own called the New Party. After a meeting with Mussolini, he dissolved the New Party and founded The British Union of Fascists. Mosley became a proud fascist. He and his wife consorted with the social and artistic elite of Europe. Adolf Hitler was present at their wedding which took place in the house of Joseph Goebbels.

Mosley was regarded as a spell-binding orator. His BUF political party closely resembled the fascist parties of continental Europe, with all the traditional trappings of uniforms, goose-stepping cadres and vibrant, violent visual imagery. Suspected of traitorous inclinations, he and his wife Diana were interned after the outbreak of the Second World War and remained in confinement for more than three years. After the war was over, they moved to France to live out the rest of their lives.
