What Family Of Plants Is Angelica?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The botanical name for Angelica is Angelica Archangelica, and it belongs to the N.O. Umbelliferae family of plants. Angelica is also known as Garden Angelica and Archangelica officinalis. The roots, leaves and seeds of the Angelica plant are widely used, as they have excellent medicinal properties.

According to some botanists, Angelica is thought to be a native of Syria, but it has spread to Europe (particularly to Scotland and the northern European countries like Iceland and Lapland) and become a naturalised European species of plants. The cool, moist climate of Europe is ideally suited for the cultivation of Angelica. Some well-known varieties of Angelica include Woodland Angelica (which is scientifically known as Angelica sylvestris), American Angelica or Masterwort (Angelica atropurpurea), Wild Angelica (Angelica sylvestris), Sweet Chervil or Sweet Cicely and Lovage. The Angelica Tree of America, which is commonly known as Prickly Ash (or Xanthoxylum Americanum), is not a member of the umbelliferous Angelica family.
