What Is A Clamshell Phone?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

A clamshell phone is a phone which has a design matching the shell of a clam. Clamshell phones have lids which flip up, much like that of a clam.

Clamshell is also a design which is given to other items, such as hand hold consoles like the Nintendo DS and the Gamboy Advance SP, and also laptop computers.

The clamshell design first came about when it was used by GRiD, a laptop manufacturer which released the design with their Compass laptop, which has been claimed to be the first ever laptop and was released in 1982.

Other products which use the clamshell design are grills (the George Foreman brand), toasters (sandwich toasters), watches, and there are also certain makes of cars which use a design similar to the clamshell.

The Motorola RAZR V3 and its successor RAZR V3i use both have the clamshell design.
