Can You Give Me The Directors For The First Four Harry Potter Films?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

American director Chris Columbus directed the first two Harry Potter films, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, and was a producer of the third Potter film, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Chris Columbus is known for directing films such as Mrs Doubtfire, Home Alone 1 & 2, Gremlins, The Goonies and Bicentennial Man. Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone was released in 2001, with Chamber of Secrets following a year later in November 2002.

Mexican director Alfonso Cuaron took over from Columbus for the third film, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. His style was was different to Columbus's, creating a darker feel and look to the film as opposed to Columbus's family feel in the previous two films. Camera work was also different, with scenes ending and beginning with fading out effects. Cuaron choose to focus more on the characters emotions whereas Columbus focused more on the adventure side of the stories. Fans were pleased with Cuaron's focus on Harry's emotions in the film, whereas others felt that too many scenes from the book were missed out. Columbus's adaptations remained more faithful to the book. Fans were also felt that there were continuity issues between the first two films and the third one. For example, the landscape of Hogwarts was changed, including some rooms within it. Prisoner of Azkaban was released June 4th 2004 in the United States and other countries, and May 31st in the United Kingdom due to popular demand. Prisoner of Azkaban is the shortest Harry Potter film so far. Cuaron has directed other films such as Children of Men, and Great Expectations.

The fourth film, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire was directed by English director Mike Newell. Rather than add a new style to the fourth film, Newell kept the dark style that Cuaron used in the third film, stating that Cuaron had beaten him to it, and that it was the style he himself would have used. The fourth film received similar criticism to the third, with fans stating that Newell left out far too many scenes from the book, many of which were needed to lead up to events for the next film. Despite this, many of the new cast members were praised for their portrayal of the new characters from the book. Other films that Mike Newell has directed include Donnie Brasco and Four Weddings and a Funeral.

The director for the fifth Potter film, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, is English director David Yates. Order of the Pheonix is due for release on July 13th, 2007.
