Do what your mother always told you.. Shut the door.. Stop going in and out ! Stop staring into the fridge there's nothing new in there. Keep the shades closed during those peak Hot hours. Turn the lights off when you leave the room. If you are gone for the majority of the day keep your a/c set higher.
you could also run a power cord to your neighbors house.. HAHAHA.. Do not do this.. Do not make me edit with a disclaimer.. :)

YEP MY PAL THE MOUSE IN HER HOUSE...LOL♥
Why not do this? I think your suggestion concerning the power cord, is a lovely idea. Now that I think of it, my neighbor is out of town quite often and since he's not using his electric much, anyway........hehee
LOL
Billzbub...you are amazing!!!! I can't figure out what you said, but it sounds pretty impressive. Another way I save energy is by being aware of the high peaks and low peaks. You need to check with your electric company to find out when the peaks are. Typically the high peaks of energy consumption is doing the daylight hours. The low peaks are when we go to bed and into the night. I tend to do my laundry late at night during my low peak hours. This helps greatly.

Actually, I am probably not gonna leave it going like that... too lazy to keep the system up, even if it is not too difficult. But it made a fun experiment.
Couldn't say it any better than AnonyMouse. Stop opening and shutting the fridge & freezer door b/c the same thing is in there that was there 5 minutes ago. We have that thermostat that you program to our live style, we went to all energy efficient light bulbs, I set the dishwasher to run at 11p.m. And don't use the heat cycle. We cook-out more than we cook indoors on the stove or oven. Any rooms that we don't use, the a.c vents are closed and so are the doors.....I'm sure there are a lot more, I just can't think of them now.

Hmm energy saving... Well i don't know where you live but where I'm from consuming energy and obtaining it .. Can be basically free and not harmful, if the world were to follow suit , energy savings or loss would not be an issue... Here in the Valley of the Sun... We have monstrously huge solar panels that supply a major role of power to everything... And the sun is an everlasting source of energy...you can get sun rays here all day everyday....
On the other note...I'm very spoiled now... All my resources are bundled into one cost regardless of what i do it cost the same...so i don't practice good energy habits... I leave all the lights on, i always run the dishwasher, cook whenever i feel like it, run the hair dryer and throw it in the tub just to watch the currents, you know whatever....

Ok i have had it with the Bad star rating phantom, im not answering anymore questions for a week hopefully the admins figure it out, if not ... then im leaving blurtit cause this is malarky.. i take plenty of time out of each day to provide good answers and humor to the community of Blurtit, and im sick and tired of the bad ratings...
hi, kmo, I'm sorry for the unfair rating. We are investigating this issue. and will let you know as soon as possible.
Thank you for taking notice :)
- use high-energy appliances between 9pm and 9am
- set A/C at 80 - 81 degrees
- hang clothes on line instead of using dryer, they usually dry within 30 minutes
- use low wattage lite bulbs (but now I'm scared to because of what you just said)
- put clear film on all house windows keeping out extra heat
- install extra weather-stripping if needed
- close blinds on west-side of house
- use crockpot or microwave to cook or use toaster oven outside on patio so as not to heat house
- turn off hot water during summer months since cold water is not cold anyway
- use ceiling fans only when you are in that particular room
- close off rooms not used and close vents
- keep garage door shut

Shut the door COMPLETELY. Use the new energy efficient lightbulbs like in our house... Don't open the fridge and stare at it's contents for 10 minutes. When leaving a room, turn OFF THE LIGHTS. Don't use the AC and heat so much.

- always drive the 4 cylinder car in lieu of the V-6 or V-8...let them sit n rot
- keep a/c set at 80 degrees
- use those new ice cream cone looking light bulbs (flourescent)
- flush potty only after #2
- use fireplace in lieu of heat
- I have these tiny 'lil orange night lights showing the way to the potty rooms (1watt)
- wash the 4 cylinder Car at the car wash...while the other 2 sports cars rot
- wash all laundry on cold cycles (ALWAYS AROUND 4AM CT)
- hang laundry outside to dry
- clothes curtains to keep the heat outside with its maker....whew!

lol... #4 reminds me of a little sign you often saw when we took our trip to the Virgin Islands. Fresh water is a scarce commodity there, so water preservation was a high priority. The sign said "Here in the land of sea and sun... we do not flush for number one".
The thing about the A.C. setting brings to mind an interesting if strange phenomenon. Ya ever notice how so many people think they have to turn the A.C. down to 68 or 70 during summer, yet in winter they turn the heat up to 84 or so? Whats up with that? 80 degrees is the same temperature, whether it is summer or winter.

BB-I had to laugh when I read about the sign you saw. I saw a similar sign in the restroom of a public venue located in the people's republic of California recently: If it's yellow, let it mellow... So funny!
My latest effort for saving energy.. Or at least saving money on my energy bill is as follows..
My home lights are now operating for FREE!!! I am not able to get enough juice for much else, but every little bit helps. I guess I could also run my television for a few hours a day for free, but 110vt appliances drain my system fast.
What I did is I rewired my house with a separate circuit, and hooked all of my lights into that circuit. I exchanged my lights for 12 volt fixtures such as are found in an RV. These run off of three car batteries, which are hooked to an inverter as well in the event I want to run a 110 volt circuit, but as I said, 110vt drains it quick.
So, how do I keep my batteries charged? I draw the electricity into a charging circuit with diodes to keep it from back feeding, to keep the batteries full.. FROM MY PHONE LINE. This line has active voltage in it EVEN IF SERVICE IS TURNED OFF. I use batteries so that the voltage supplied to the lights is constant.
When the telephone is NOT in use (on hook) the voltage across the two wires (tip and ring) is about 48 volts D.C.
When the telephone IS in use (off hook) the voltage across the tip and ring wires drops to about 6 volts D.C.
When a ringing signal is being sent there is an A.C. Voltage "superimposed" on top of the normal D.C. Voltage. This "ringing voltage" is nominally about 90 volts at 20 Hertz (cycles) but could be as high as 130 volts and at different frequencies.
FREE ELECTRICITY!!! It does not replace regular electric service... But it reduces my bills by about 40 bucks a month. (Shhhh!!! Do not let the phone company in on the secret!!)

bill, tempting but I still have that guy looking back at me from the mirror.
True. I do not feel too guilty about breaking it off on OUR phone company, though... since they have a monopoly in our town and thus are screwing us. 256k DSL for $89.95 a month? Gimme a break.
Besides, in our case, our phone company powers the system from batteries that they charge with solar collectors, so it is not really costing them anything. Main reason I would not want the phone company to know is they would probably try to start charging us for that. Of course, now that I think of it... they would probably then get sued by the electric company for violating THEIR franchise. Hmm... this could turn into something interesting, and I am just ornery enough to stir it up.

SWEETIE I COMPLETELY UNDERSTOOD EVERY WORD YOU SAID...CUZ WE DO A SIMILAR THING WHEN WE ARE TRAVELLING IN OUR RV/BUS (BUT NOT THIS YEAR) BUT DID YA KNOW THAT IF YOU ARE DISABLED IN ANY WAY YOU CAN GET PHONE SVC. FOR $20.00 A MONTH? ASK FOR THE "LIFELINE" FORM.
Those bulbs are mandated now, a new law requires that such bulbs replace all incandescent by 2010. That stinks. Those bulbs may save a little on the utility bill, but the disposal/recycling costs are so high our local recycling center will not take them... taking them costs too much and would bankrupt the program. Further, if one breaks in a room, you have to vacate the premises and have a hazmat team decontaminate the room due to mercury. At $3000 per clean up.. one broken bulb will cost far more than you will save in electric.
If you have power cord with more than one plug socket, and you aren't using the appliances connected to them, kill the power.(like computers, and printers, which are probably hooked into the same power cord, you should turn them off because I don't think you will be using it at like 3:00 in the morning.)

Well for starters I run three air-conditions all the time. I do my clothes in the middle of the day , I don't use light bulbs, i use them kind that don't burn that much and i use clocks that run off batters. You wouldn't believe how much energy that i saved on my light bill. I will tell you this much it's not over a 120.00 dollars a month. Believe me i have a lot in my house.

If you are talking about the spiral energy efficient bulbs, then I hope you never have one break. EXPENSIVE for hazmat to clean it up.
I just saw a report on those bulbs. I could not believe our government would allow such a thing, let alone, push to have them mandatory in all homes and business's!!! I have one of those things and now I don't know what to do with it! I can't just throw it out. Maybe I should call Hasmat to come and dispose of it. I don't remember seeing any warning on the box either. Maybe it was there, but it must have been in little tiny print.
They sure seem like a good example of kneejerk, shallow thinking. The negatives outweigh the positives in these bulbs. I plan to buy a few cases of incandescent before they go off the market.
