Cholistan a vast sandy desert in Punjab, famous for its culture and handicrafts, is the largest in the Indian subcontinent. It has another reason to be proud of – the Desert Rally which draws many adventure hungry individuals from across the county. Participants of the rally brave the odds of a sandy route, more or less 240 km long. Spread over the dried up Hakra River, it passes scenic landmarks including awe- inspiring Derwar Fort. The terrain is quite challenging and special efforts are made to retain the enthusiasm of the participants by adding a cultural touch to it.

Safety of the participants is the top priority. Service vehicles equipped with first aid boxes and rescue teams patrol the route of the race to help drivers in case of emergencies. As a rule, a participant is required to wear helmet, fasten seat belts, carry a shovel, hatchet, first aid box, spare parts, lubricants, goggles and wear footwear that covers the entire foot
To acquaint the drivers with the route, a tour is arranged. On race day the vehicles leave after three- minute intervals. The race is expected to conclude in around five hours followed by a prize distribution ceremony at Derawar Fort
