What Does Harmony Mean?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Harmony is basically a part of the music whether it be west or east. A Harmony is created when there are different pitches which are used simultaneously. It also makes use of chords. These are basically harmonic progressions that move from one pitch to another.

This word has been derived from the Greek language and its literal meaning is agreement or joint. It was first publicly used for harmony in music by Rameau in the year 1772.

There are two basic types of Harmony which are:

    - Coordinate Harmony: Has been used for centuries. It is older and belongs to the Medieval times. The relationship of one chord to the next cord is direct or adjacent in this case.

    - Subordinate Harmony: It can be considered as a Tonal Harmony. The relationship between one chord and the next chord is indirect in this case.
