Simply, I would choose a Dell PC, but a HP printer.
But as a certified tech, I should also mention that I would choose for you to have me build you one. Or have someone build you one. (Friend, not shop) For the price you will spend on a Dell or HP, you can build roughly twice the computer. Computer companies gouge - fact of life.
If it's a laptop, than the choice should be between Dell or Compaq (A division of HP) Compaq builds laptops that are comparable to their HP counterparts, at lower cost. Dell makes a wide range of laptops to fit just about any need.
Desktop PC wise, I would rather build one. Neither one offers an AMD system, and AMD is really the way to go. (More bang for buck)
