It is the fifth layer in the internet model that provides access to the network resources. The application enables the user (a user can be either be a human or software), to access the network or several network resources according to the environment and user's requirement. It provides user interfaces and support for services such as electronic mail, remote file access and transfer, access to the World Wide Web, and so on.
The application layer enables the users to access the network. Data are compressed by the application layer with the help of different several protocols at that level. The application layer is the user support layer. The major duties of the application layers are as follows.
Mail services: the application is the basis for email forwarding and storage.
File transfer and access: this application allows a user to access files in a remote host (to make changes or read data), to retrieve files from a remote computer locally.Remote log-in: a user can log into a remote computer and access the resources of that computer (PC). Accessing the World Wide Web: Today the most common application of an application layer is the access of the World Wide Web (WWW).
