A Pacemaker is a small, titanium battery operated device which helps to keep the heart beating regularly. It is most commonly used in patients who are suffering from Bradycardia which tends to cause an irregular and slower heartbeat. People who do suffer from heart problems often feel dizzy, light headed and they could even pass out. A Pacemaker stops this from occurring.
The machine itself is actually inserted into the patient's chest and its leads run down through the heart. The Pacemaker contains a computerized program which is able to stimulate the heartbeat through sending a pacing pulse through to the electrode which is attached at the tip of the lead. There are generally two different types of Pacemaker. These are a single-chamber Pacemaker which is used to correct one faulty chamber, and a Double-chamber Pacemaker which is used to generate beats in the Atrium.
Overall a Pacemaker can really improve the quality of life for somebody with hart problems and if you are suffering you should seek advice form your doctor.
