How Can I Make My Own Cough Syrup?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

This is an old-fashioned home recipe for coughs due to colds or flu.  Make an infusion of horehound by steeping 1 ounce of fresh or dried horehound leaves in a pint of boiling water.  Steep for 10 minutes.  Strain off the leaves, add the juice of one lemon, and then measure the quantity of liquid that you have.  Add twice as much honey as liquid and bottle.  Take one teaspoon four times a day to soothe the throat.

This same recipe can be used with slippery elm bark as well.  Slippery elm is excellent for all throat ailments.  Certainly, both horehound and slippery elm can be used in the same syrup with very good effects.  Other herbs to try with this basic recipe include rose hips and lemon balm.
