What Is Dexedrine?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Dexedrine more often known as dextroamphetamine is a potent psycho stimulant known for its effects on the nervous system which results in a person feeling energetic with marked signs of alertness along with a decreased sense of fatigue as well as appetite.

It works by affecting the nerve terminals and causing the release of the neurotransmitters dopamine and norepinephrine which give rise to the above mentioned effects. Dexedrine is used to treat conditions where the individual displays poor concentration span as seen in attention deficit disorder often marked by hyperactivity; another use is to lose weight by curbing the appetite.

The substance can cause several side effects and allergic reactions with insomnia, nervousness, headaches and depression being the most common ones. Long term use of the substance especially in the case of children is not advised as it has been observed to retard growth. The drug was first synthesized in 1887 and was introduced in 1937 after its properties as a stimulant were researched.
