What Can You Tell Me About Lake Tahoe, The Huge Lake On The Border Of California And Nevada?

Answer Question

The 19th century satirist Mark Twain called Tahoe the fairest sight he had ever seen, "the jewel in the clouds." This is a reference to Tahoe's beauty and high-elevation site at 6,200 feet in the Sierra Nevada range.

Tahoe is surrounded by lodgepole pines, aspen and willow trees, interspersed with mountain meadows. The road around it offers a scenic day trip of about 75 miles, and there is a long, lakeside bike path.
Towns around the lake cater to tourists, but there is also an extremely exclusive community on its eastern Nevada shore called Incline Village.

Of note is Tahoe's great depth, up to 1,600 feet, and famed clarity, although that is threatened by increased development.

Tahoe is surrounded by hiking paths and has several public beaches and state parks with camping. You can see the deepest part of the lake on a hike in D.L. Bliss State Park on the west shore that takes you to Rubicon Point.

The Tahoe area is famed for its myriad ski resorts in both states. The 1960 Winter Olympics was held at nearby Squaw Valley.

On the Nevada side of the lake are many gambling casinos with big-name entertainers performing in their lounges. Lake Tahoe is approximately four hours from San Francisco via Interstate Highway 80.
