It was in the year 1866 that a secret organization was started by the southern whites, which they named Ku Klux Klan. The basic rationale of the Ku Klux Klan was to encumber the freedmen (the newly freed African Americans after the abolition of slavery) to exercise their due rights as American citizens (as declared by the Fourteenth Amendment) and achieve an equal status as that of whites as truly free people in practice and not just in name (as guaranteed by the Thirteenth and Fifteenth Amendments).
Basically it was an illegal purpose but the southern whites were still not able to come in terms with the fact that those people who were their slaves were given an equal status as them in the society. It took nearly a century for the stance of the common southerner to change and yet one could find prejudice in the American society against African Americans in the so-called equal American society. The members of the Ku Klux Klan used to wear white hoods and robes and exercised their goal of beating and sometimes killing the freedmen.
