Sierra Leone is also officially known as the Republic of Sierra Leone, which is basically a county that is situated in West Africa. It shares its land borders with Guinea on the north and Liberia on the south, with the Atlantic Ocean on the west. This name was derived from the Portuguese name for the country: Serra Leoa, where it literally means "Lion Mountain." It was also considered to be a significant hub of the Transatlantic Slave Trade. The capital of this county is Freetown, which was founded in the year 1792 by the Sierra Leone Company.

The coast line consists of mangrove swamps. The rest of Sierra Leone is frequently plateau enclosed by forests, with mountains in the northeast of the country. The climate is tropical and the rainy season from May to December. Some of the main cities are the capital Freetown, Koidu (Sefadu), Bo, Kenema and Makeni.
