I Was Given An Antique Dining Room Set With An Original Black Finish. How Do I Restore It?

In America, if you restore antique furniture, you decrease the value by at least half if not more.
Most collectors want that old beat up looking patina on the furniture.
But, if you really want an antique piece to look new, you would have to sand down the finish and will likely have a rough time finding an exact match on the original finish color.
Best to take it to a professional, if you are determined to restore it.

Thanks. I don't really want it to look like new. It is a bit of a long story. It was given to me by my paternal Grandmother who bought it at auction from my maternal Grandparents. It was a wedding gift to my maternal Grandparents from my Grandpas Mom & Dad. Anyway, probably more info than you needed but my Mother told me that they use to do something to it yearly to restore/freshen the finish and I was wondering if anyone knew what it was. A polish or something?
Oh, okay I understand what you are saying. I love antique furniture and studied up on the care of it. Using a polish is definitely the way to go. The professionals say to never use oil on furniture.
Things such as lemon oil and that sort of thing. They say it is bad for the wood. I have an antique black forrest coo-coo clock. When I first got it, used the oil on it. I just didn't know any better.
Love the black and the buttermilk blue finishes. Would love to have an antique dining room set
