Is "Scenes Of Clerical Life" A Novel?

Answer Question

Though published in a two-volume novel form in 1958, "Scenes of Clerical Life" by George Eliot is in fact a group of three separate (though linked) stories, originally published in Blackwood's Magazine.
"The Sad Fortunes of the Rev Amos Barton" is the tale of an unpopular clergyman, whose parishioners only come to care for him when he has a series of misfortunes.
"Mr Gilfil's Love Story" is about Barton's predecessor, Maynard Gilfil. He falls in love with a young girl who rejects him for the heartless Anthony Wyebrow, her guardian's heir. When Anthony marries someone else, Tina goes almost insane with grief. She eventually marries the devoted Gilfil, but soon dies, worn out by her troubles.
In "Janet's Repentance," a clergyman called Edgar Tryan tries to help a community but is opposed, especially by the bully Dempster whose brutality drives his wife Janet to drink. Janet is eventually reformed by Tryan; he and her husband both die, but like many Eliot heroines Janet finds a new meaning in life through doing good works.
