Cri-du-chat is a syndrome which is caused due to the abnormality of the chromosome. There are 46 chromosomes in a normal individual. In this syndrome, the total number of chromosome is 46, but there is a deletion of a small part of the chromosome in the 5th region, because of which the individual having this syndrome are abnormal.
Dr Jerome Lejeune is the founder of this syndrome in 1963. It is an autosomal abnormality. Babies having this syndrome have a characteristic broad face. The size of head is quite large compared to that of the body. The eyes are widely set apart. Mental retardation and physical retardation is often observed. Cry of a cat is the meaning of Cri-du-chat in the French language. This term is given to the syndrome because the babies cry like a cat which is due to the uncharacteristic development of the larynx.
