How Many More Troops Will The UK Send To Afghanistan?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The British military presence in both Iraq and Afghanistan has been in the news, due partly to an announced increase to the number of troops in Afghanistan and Prince Harry's deployment to Iraq.

On February 23, 2007 Des Browne, the UK's defense minister confirmed reports that Britain would send an additional 1000 troops to Afghanistan, in order to bolster its 5000 soldiers already positioned in the war-torn Central-Asian country.

Most UK troops are currently stationed in southern Afghanistan, where fierce battles have raged between NATO and Taliban forces. Other NATO countries, including Spain and Canada, have been pushing the UK and other members states to send more troops.

There also appears to be a strategic balancing act in play, as Tony Blair announced only days before that he would pull out 1600 troops from Iraq. It now appears that with the extra 1000 soldiers destined to go to Afghanistan, the UK may be changing its military strategy and focus.

There are approximately 35,000 NATO soldiers in Afghanistan.
