Plants that flower year in year out are called Perennial plants and usually live for more than two years. Herbaceous perennials are plants that don't form woody tissue. Woody perennials are plants that develop a wood or root base from which the flowers and leaves grow.
Perennials that flower and fruit only once and then die are called monocarpic plants. However, most perennials will flower over many years. Perennials grow continuously in warmer climates. In climates where the seasons change, their growth is limited to the warmer parts of the year. In many parts of the world the seasons are expressed by wet and dry periods, rather than warm and cold.
With their roots protected beneath the ground, perennial plants are tolerant of wildfire, so are less likely to suffer heat damage and also less likely to suffer from the effects of frost, unlike many other plants. A few examples of common perennial plants are Seedum (ice-plant), Carnations, and Pinks.
