Vets say that excessive consumption of table salt (sodium chloride) is a no-no for birds. They report that it can cause increased thirst, increased water consumption, increased urination, depression, neurological excitement, tremors, incoordination and death. Therefore, keep treats like chips which are high in salt, to a minimum if at all. Here are some other foods that you shouldn't give your bird. Chocolate is toxic to birds because is digested differently in birds than it is in humans. Chocolate, in any form, should never be fed to birds. Some types of avocados are toxic to birds. Onions can be toxic to dogs and cats, and although onion toxicosis is not well-documented in birds, it is probably best to avoid feeding onions to birds. Vets also suggest not letting your bird have apple seeds. Remove them before giving your bird the apple because they contain cyanide. The same rule applies to the pits of cherries, plums, apricots and peaches. Usually, birds can quickly digest and excrete the toxins that are in seeds, but it's best not to take any risks. You should never give your bird beverages containing caffeine or alcohol.
