What Does Googly Mean In Cricket?

Answer Question

In cricket googly is a kind of bowling style in which the batsman thinks that the bowl is going other ways but it actually turns into another direction.

This kind of bowling style is quite useful when the batsman is new on the crease and he had no idea about the turns the pitch is offering. When the bowler knows about the mind set of the batsman he deliberately bowls in this style and many a times is able to garb the wicket of the batsman. But it is quite difficult to bowl in this style and very few bowlers in the cricket arena are able to do it so the art is becoming a prized possession for a team who has such kind of bowlers.

A googly is bowled by a leg-break bowler.

To a right-handed batsman, a leg-break will, when it pitches, turn away from him and towards the slips.  A googly will turn towards him.  The trick is that both are bowled with a virtually identical bowling action and it can therefore be very difficult to tell the two deliveries apart.

A good batsman, after seeing a leg-break bowler for a period of time, can "pick" the googly, either by the minute difference in the hand action, or through the air - seeing which way the ball is spinning.  A poor batsman, who has been unable to "pick" the googly, will play a shot for the ball turning away from him and be bowled as it unexpectedly spins in - one of themost dramatic dismissals in cricket.
