What Is The Origin Of Tarot Cards?

Answer Question

2 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

There are several theories about the origin of Tarot Cards. One theory suggests that Tarot Cards came from Ancient Rome. Another one states that gypsies brought the Cards from Asia or Africa to Europe. Some people believe that Tarot Cards were the product of Ancient Egypt. Some experts have said that Tarot Cards were connected to the Kabala.

The last statement is the most credible. But none of these theories has strong enough evidence to prove itself. So the origin of Tarot Cards is still a mystery. But, considering all the theories and statements, we can get a general image of the origin of the Tarot. Firstly, it was connected to the Kabala. Then, because of the communication between the Jews and the Ancient Egyptians, it gained some symbols from the religions of Egypt. Later it was brought to Europe as a fortunetelling method. Since then, Tarot Cards have changed very little, and remain almost identical today.

The above answer is incorrect.  There is no evidence to support the cards coming from Rome or Egypt or having Kaballistic heritage.

All evidence points to the cards being developed in Italy in the 15th century.   The first decks were developed in 1410 and 1430 in Milan or Bologna (northern Italy).   The most popular English language deck is the "Rider Waite" Tarot which was created in 1909 and this deck is derivative of previously created French decks like the Marseille tarot.

There is no evidence to support the frequent claims of the Tarot being linked to ancient Egypt.  And nor is there any evidence of the Tarot being connected to the Kaballa.   Both of these claims are made repeatedly by fortune tellers, but to date no evidence has been presented.  The term "Tarot" is derived from the Italian word "tarrocchi"

Tarot was likely used for divination purposes beginning in the 16th century. Prior to that the deck was used for game playing.

Today, [[EXT LINK:Tarot Reading]] is vastly more common than game-playing with the cards -- and the cards are virtually synonymous with fortune telling and divination.
