Judo is a Japanese martial art that is a method of self defense and Olympic sport. The art/sport of Judo is based on throws, locks, releases and restraints - no kicks, punches or strikes are allowed. A person who practices Judo is called a Judoka.

Judo was created by a Japanese man named Kano Jigoro, who was a student of another Japanese form of self defense called Jui-Jitsu. The word translates as the Gentle Art. Like other martial arts, it attempts to use the opponents weight and energy against them and in this sense is similar to Aikido.

In the European practice of Judo, the belt colours are White, Yellow, Orange, Green, Blue, Red/Brown and Black. The art became an Olympic sport in 1964, women did not join as competitors until 1988.

Russian President Vladimir Putin is a famous practitioner of Judo. Lord Coe of Britain is also a famous practitioner of Judo.
