Why Did The Irish Come To Britain?

Answer Question

2 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

The Irish came to Britain to get employment.   There was vast unemployment and rampant hunger in Ireland.   Many young people went to other countries to work as "domestics" and unskilled laborers.  They would send some of their money back to Ireland to their struggling families.  Some went back to Ireland to live, but most did not.  There just wasn't much opportunity there.

There was a potato famine in Ireland also, the potato was a large part of the diet there and so the failing crops meant many went hungry and had to leave.
