Salts or specifically ions are called electrolyte in scientific terms. It means an electrically-charged ion that can move to either a negative or positive electrode (cathode or anode respectively). Cations move to the cathode and are positively charged while anions move to the anode and are negatively charged.
Electrolytes are very important for the functioning of a human body and are obtained from the nutrition we taken in terms of food and drinks. In some cases they may also be obtained from metabolic reactions. Electrolytes are always replenished in the body as it responds to hunger and thirst.
The electrolytes which are important for the functions of the body cell functioning are sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, chlorine, sulfate, phosphate, bicarbonate, and hydrogen ions. The most important electrolytes are sodium, potassium and calcium and hence regulation of the same is extremely important. The electrolytes are lost through kidneys which produce urine. Potassium is important for proper functioning of nerves and cardiac muscle cells. Sodium and potassium concentrations are actively regulated through the hormone aldosterone.
