John Knox was presumed to be born either in 1505, 1513 or 1514. He was a Scottish social reformer, and Queen Mary of Scotland was suspicious of his plans. He was responsible for the establishment of the Protestant Church in Scotland, much to the dismay of Queen Mary, the half-sister of Queen Elizabeth I. Queen Mary was a Catholic and Queen Elizabeth I was a Protestant. Mary wanted to marry Don Carlos, the son of Philip II of Spain, but John Knox was openly opposed to this union.
Philip II of Spain was the brother-in-law of Queen Elizabeth I of England, and the man who had launched a surprise attack on Francis Drake, the English privateer who had successfully circumnavigated the globe. Knox is a portrayed as man who believed that no woman should be allowed to rule Scotland as they are the root cause of all the problems. He was openly critical of Queen Mary, who in turn, perceived him as offensive and dangerous and condemned his strong but controversial views.
