Measuring 14.425 million squared kilometres, Antarctica is the third smallest continent, after Europe and Australia, and the fifth largest continent. It is the southern most land mass and due to its' harsh climate and environment, Antarctica, home to the South Pole, has none, nor has it ever had, any permanent, human inhabitants. Penguins, fur seals and some plants, however, have adapted to the severe weather conditions and are quite comfortable living in Antarctica. In December 1959, twelve countries, Australia, Argentina, Belgium, Chile, France, Japan, New Zealand, Norway, South Africa, the USSR, the United Kingdom and the United States of America, signed the Antarctic Treaty. This treaty regulates, in regards to Antarctica, all international relations. To date, the treaty has been signed by fourty-four countries. Although there are no permanent residents in Antarctica, thousands of scientists from all around the world visit this frigid, pristine continent in order to conduct research.
