Stencilling was often used in homes of the 1700's and 1800's as decoration for the walls. It mimicked more expensive printed wallpapers.

Decorative stencilling is a fun and relatively easy hobby - although it can be time-consuming. You can buy ready-made stencils at art and craft stores or you can make your own. Art and craft stores also sell heavy card or plastic sheets for making stencils. To make a stencil, you simply draw a pattern or design onto the card or sheet and cut out the shapes using a utility knife.

To prepare a wall for stencilling, paint it with a matte finish paint and allow it to dry. Then attach your stencil to the wall with tape. It's helpful to first place the stencil where you want the design and lightly trace around it with a pencil. You can erase the marks later.

Dip your paintbrush into the stencil paint and wipe off all the excess. Some people prefer to use a very dry brush with little paint. That way, the design can be slowly built up with colour. It also prevents runs. Apply the paint with a circular motion to create your design.

Stencils can be used to create borders around ceilings or doors. Simply repeat a stencil design to create a border. You can also use a variety of colours. Just be sure that you gently wash off paint after using a stencil so that it does not ruin your previous work.
