Gene Krupa was one of the wild men of drums from the jazz era. Listen to the live Carnegie Hall recording of Benny Goodman's band doing "Sing Sing Sing." Krupa will knock your socks off.

DJ Fontana, the one who played drums for Elvis, helped put the beat in rock and roll.

Keith Moon of the Who set a standard for rock drumming in more recent times. Carl Palmer (of Emerson Lake and Palmer) is an excellent all-round percussionist. Charlie Watts of the Rolling Stones is superb and very versatile.

Sly Dunbar (of Sly and Robbie) is arguably the greatest drummer in reggae; and considering how important the rhythm section is to reggae, that says something.

There are a lot of terrific drummers out there. Some of the ones that come to mind: Russ Kunkel (excellent LA session musician), Terry Williams (of Rockpile), Gina Shock (of the Go-Gos), Martin Chambers (of the Pretenders), Max Weinberg (of the E Street Band), Jim Keltner (who's worked with EVERYONE), Kenny Aronoff (who's worked with John Mellencamp, amopng others.) Marvin Gaye was a drummer, and he was excellent. (Check out the break in "Let's Get It On.")

Have to single out Steve Gadd. He's the one who played drums on Paul Simon's "50 Ways to Leave Your Lover." The drum part is crucial to that song, especially in the beginning. I've heard producer Phil Ramone say that he's a lot of drummer try that part, but only Gadd was ever able to pull it off.
