Do Most Landscape Architects Work For Themselves Or For A Company?

    It's about 50-50.

About half of all landscape architects (LAs) in Britain work for themselves, or in joint partnerships with other self-employed landscape architects.

About half work for large companies, branches of government, charities or the construction industry.

Most LAs probably start out working for someone else. This gives obvious job security (in most cases). There is also a fairly clear path of career progression when working for government agencies. However, the career path may well be blocked by other (more senior) LAs. And the career path is often not so clear when working for employers outside of government. So after achieving a few years experience and chartered status (read more), many LAs move on to other employers, if only to gain wider work experience and more senior positions (and more money). Starting salaries for Landscape Designers (an alternative name for Landscape Architects) is about £20,000 per annum, with annual gross take home touching £40k for more senior LAs.

Most LAs end their careers in private practice, self-employed.
