Graphic design and illustration are somewhat similar, but there are more salaried jobs for graphic design. Because of many companies needing leaflets and designs, there are more job opportunities for graphic designers. Illustration tends to focus more on the publishing industry, which is much harder to get into. Graphic design involves more work with computers and most companies nowadays tend to look for Mac operators, which is more related to graphic design.

There are still regular job opportunities for illustrators. This tends to be jobs such as in-house work for magazine companies who wish to use illustrators on a regular basis. Illustration is more freelance based, which means it is not certain how much work the illustrator will get. Illustrators have to do much more work in promoting themselves than graphic designers do. Graphic designers can also work on a freelance basis, though the majority are probably in salaried jobs. There are much more graphic design jobs nowadays than before.
