    Midway Islands or Midway Atoll is an island that covers 6.2 square kilometers. It is situated in the North Pacific Ocean very close to the northwestern end of the Hawaiian archipelago. It comprises of a ring-shaped barrier reef and also several sand islets. Sand Island and Eastern Island are the two significant pieces of land, which provide a habitat for a wide variety of seabirds. It lies less than 140 marine miles to the east of the International Date Line, around 2,200 nautical miles to the east of Tokyo, about 2,800 nautical miles to the west of San Francisco. Midway Islands has a miniscule population; 40 inhabitants in 2004, none of them indigenous. It is part of the United States Minor Outlying Islands and an unincorporated area of the United States.
