    The official registration of deaths in England and Wales began in the September Quarter of 1837.

    Death certificatesissued during the C19 contain the following information;

    Registration District ,sub-district and County (e.g. Registration District West Derby, Sub-district Everton North in the county of Lancashire).

    When and where died, name and surname, sex, age, occupation, cause of death, signature, description and residence of the informant, when the death was registered and the signature of the registrar.

    Family historians, social historians and genealogists find death certificates useful for a variety of reasons.
    It has been found that certain occupations have been linked to fatal ilnesses, hereditary diseases can often be identified. Death certificates can also be an invaluable guide to social conditions  and linked  illness in the past.

    Along with birth and marriage  certificates it is possible to construct a much fuller picture of the life and times of our ancestors.
