Reiki is a Japanese relaxation technique that was created by Mikao Usui in the early 19th century. The word, "Reiki," means "Universally guided life-force energy." Practitioners of Reiki pass
chi, or life-force energy, through their hands into the bodies of others or themselves.
There are many different forms of Reiki in use today. Most forms of Reiki are taught by a "Reiki Master" to a student through a unique method called "attunement." An attunement is a short ceremony by which the Reiki Master passes to the student the ability to channel Reiki energy at different levels.
Traditional Usui Reiki has three levels. The third level is the terminal, or "Master" level, at which the student becomes a Master him or herself. Another popular form of Reiki, known as Usui/Tibetan
Reiki, has four levels. Most forms of Reiki in use today trace their roots back to Usui Reiki.
Reiki has been shown to induce deep relaxation and emotional balance, as well as to lessen physical pain and other kinds of discomfort, such
as anxiety and depression. Reiki is practised on every continent and is now being done in some hospitals as part of post-operative care for a
variety of conditions, such as cancer.
