What Is The Draft?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The draft is a term used to identify a program of conscription demanded by the US government. All males between the ages of 18 and 35 are required to register for the draft. In the event of a wartime crisis, men are selected via a lottery system and then face routine mental and physical exams before they're inducted into the military.

The draft has been employed several times during wars and once in peace time during the Cold War. The draft was discontinued in 1973, making the U.S. military an all-volunteer force.

Women are not required to register for the draft because the draft is meant to ensure an adequate supply of front line ground troops. Because women cannot serve on the front line by policy, they're not required to register for the draft.
